Originating in Japan in the 17th Century the technique of 'Mokume Gane', translated roughly as 'wood grain metal', involves fusing then patterning layers of colour contrasted metals in order to produce exquisitely patterned material.

My most recent work with mokume gane involves exploring the use of digital processes and interfaces, such as CNC machine cutting and engraving, to pattern the material.

Current silversmithing work has developed into a freer, more intuitive and liberating process of 'thinking through making'. Segmented vessels grow in an organic way enabling the contemplation of form as the vessels evolve. 

As well as handcraft my practice is not adverse to utilising digital tools. I feel innovative things can happen when hand and machine craft are combined.
